Engineering colleges in Punjab:
Punjab, India is a state located in Northwest Part of India. Made famous all over the world by lively Punjabis and there food, this state needs no introduction. This article here doesn't aim to talk about their food habits with you but about the technical education in Punjab, various universities and a little light on their curriculum and admission scenario.
1. Punjab Technical University (PTU):
It's the biggest technical university located in kapurthala Punjab, India was established in 1997 based upon the no. of students enrolled, affiliated colleges and courses. There are more than 300 colleges that come under Punjab technical university and almost 3.5 lakh students studying currently under various curriculums. All the programs in engineering whether master, bachelor or diploma in engineering are semester based. The odd semester starts in July and even semester in January respectively. The applications for admission all filled in March –April for CET (common entrance test) for students of Punjab or by AIEEE.

A few of the renowned colleges in P.T.U for their exceptional infrastructure & placements are:
• RIMT-Institute of engineering & technology
• D.A.V.I.E.T- Jalandhar
• Rayat & Bahra group of institutes
2. PEC University of technology:
Former Punjab engineering college has now become PEC University. It is located in Chandigarh (U.T) and has been ranked among the top ten institutions for engineering in India time and again. Admissions are based on AIEEE bases for bachelors and GATE for masters. Masters in Total Quality engineering & Management and Industrial design are the latest technical courses added in curriculum.
3. Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU):
Guru Nanak Dev University was established at Amritsar on November 24, 1969 and is situated in Amritsar. This university has got some programs that add niche to it engineering education in Punjab that includes engineering in Food Technology, Sugar & Alcohol Technology, Textile Chemistry and Urban & Regional Planning. Admissions to these programs are made through merit in AIEEE. Applications for admission can be made during the months of May-June every year.

4. Thapar University (TU):
Thapar University was established in 1956 as an Engineering College named Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, It got established as a university in 1985 at Patiala. It has got few of the most prestigious programs in engineering to study for both at bachelor's and master's level. Students can also join the B. Tech programme through distance learning at TU. Courses in biotechnology & environmental science are one of the Niche Thapar carries when it comes to engineering. Admissions are based on AIEEE merit followed by Thapar application submission with at least 20% score required in AIEEE. 50% seats are reserved for students of Punjab and also there is quota available for sports persons, J&K migrants, foreign nationals, Punjab Govt. Nominated and Staff wards. Application starts from may every year.
5. UIET, Punjab University (PU):
Punjab University runs all its engineering programs under University institute of technology, Chandigarh. Punjab University is one of the oldest universities in India est. in 1886. About the engineering department here it's being constantly rated in top 40 campuses across India to study engineering. Admissions are completely based upon AIEEE bases. UIET carries a niche of 5 year integrated B.E-M.B.A programme. PU also carries separate counselling for N.R.I students.
6. Lovely Professional University (LPU): It's is the newest university of all the above in Punjab. LPU started as a group of colleges under P.T.U in Jalandhar, Punjab. But soon due to its exceptional study programmes and state of the art infra became a university with over 25,000 students from 28 different states in India and 26 different countries.
If you are planning to take admission into engineering in 2012 its my suggestion that start preparing for AIEEE & GATE well in advanced to get admission into Engineering in Punjab of your choice.
